Introduction

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was established on August 1974, when it took over the functions of the Overseas Technical Cooperation Agency (OCTA), the Asia Association and some other organizations. These predecessor agencies were responsible for Japan's international cooperation.

Japan has been contributing towards world peace and prosperity through its economic cooperation programmes ever since 1954, when it was allied with the Colombo Plan. In order to help other countries in achieving their national development goals, Japan transfers its technology and know-how to the countries in need of such knowledge. The principal implementing agency is JICA.

JICA as a technical cooperation organization of Japan's ODA programme has accepted more than 170,000 participants in different fields for technical training in Japan from developing countries. To date, JICA has dispatched around 50,000 experts and 20,000 Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) to other countries.

JICA has 56 overseas offices with more than 1218 staff members otherwise operating in 180 countries. Activities:

  • Development Studies
  • Project-Type Technical Cooperation
  • Technical Training of Overseas Participants
  • Youth Invitation Programme
  • Grant Aid
